What is Cement Plastering? Everything You Need to Know

Plastering your home’s interior and exterior walls is a crucial task since it gives the walls a flawless finish and provides solidity. Uneven surfaces can be hidden with a coat of plaster, making your walls appear even, smooth, and clean. Cement plastering also serves as a good foundation for painting, distempering, whitewashing, and color washing. It shields the walls from rain and other elements that could cause damage to the construction.

Cement, lime, gypsum, fine aggregates (sand), and water are utilized to make the polymeric substance or mortar used in the process. Nowadays, cement plaster is commonly used to plaster a home’s walls. This post will provide you with some basic facts on cement plaster.

Cement Plaster:

Portland cement, fine aggregates, and water are mixed together to make cement plaster. This plaster is also known as cement-sand plaster since it is made up of OPC 43 and OPC 53-grade cement combined in various amounts with sand (fine aggregate). For plastering, PPC cement is preferred over OPC-grade cement. Because PPC cement has numerous advantages over OPC cement.

The quantity of plaster coats required varies depending on the situation. A single application of plaster on inside walls is usually adequate to obtain the required quality. Two coats of plaster are required if the thickness of the plaster is greater than 15 mm or if a finer finish is desired. If the surface to be plastered is particularly uneven, three coats of plaster are put, the first of which is a scratch or dash coat for a smooth finish. After that, the base coat and final coat are applied. Two coatings of plaster are necessary for external walls, with a thickness of 12 to 18 mm.
